Extra security after vandalism on OBU campus | News
ARKADELPHIA, Ark. (KTHV) - Arkadelphia police were forced to patrol Ouachita Baptist University campus after rivalry pranks led to the arrest of seven Henderson State Students on Wednesday.
After those arrests and the vandalism, OBU isn't taking any chances. This well-known rivalry between OBU and Henderson has been going for 120 years. In the past, there's also been extra security measures at both schools the week before the game, but they are usually more about classic fun. On Wednesday, November 11 however, that rivalry went a little too far.
Decades of tradition took an unfortunate turn the week leading up to the big game. Seven students from neighboring Henderson State University were arrested after vandalizing numerous vehicles and other property on the Ouachita Baptist University campus. The incident forced school officials at OBU to take action.
"This week we typically increase security, but particularly with the incidents we have seen on campus, the Arkadelphia Police Department is also patrolling campus this week," said Trennis Henderson, vice president of communications at OBU.
While school officials are doing their part to protect the campus from any future acts of vandalism, as a tradition students are taking security measures into their own hands.
"We have the tiger guarded, we have the locks up and we have the tarp up. So, nothing can get to it, and what we do during the night starting at 8 p.m., we'll guard it all night," said one OBU student.
"Especially this year, a lot of students are just driving through parking lots just because of the incidents with the cars this year," another OBU student explained.
Officials are doing their best to keep the campus and students safe, and to keep the focus on the big game.
"The goal really is to be as safe and secure as possible, and focus on the fun aspects and move beyond what we say the first couple of nights," said Henderson.
THV11 spoke with the dean of students at Henderson, and he said that at this time the school is not worried about retaliation. The school plans to stick with their typical security this time of year, which includes additional campus police patrol.
The Henderson students arrested include:
- Woodson Leath, 19- 1 count misdemeanor criminal mischief and 1 count leaving the scene of an accident
- Camron White, 18- charged with 8 counts of misdemeanor mischief 1st
- Kade Clayton 20- charged with 8 counts of misdemeanor mischief 1st
