National forests firewood permits help slash heating costs

National forests firewood permits help slash heating costs

RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. (September 16, 2014) – As cooler temperatures loom around the corner, many homeowners are considering how best to heat their homes this winter. The Ozark-St. Francis and Ouachita National Forests are helping homeowners answer this question by offering firewood permits in many areas of the Arkansas and Oklahoma forests.

"Collecting dead and down firewood on national forests is a great way to help bear the high cost of beating colder temperatures," said Shawn Cochran, Ozark-St. Francis National Forests Ecosystems Staff Officer. "Firewood permits are affordable; they help remove burnable material from the forest floor, and wood heat is both economical and efficient."

Ouachita’s new Cliff Harris Stadium honors legendary Tiger football star

By Trennis Henderson

OBU Vice President for Communications

ARKADELPHIA, Ark.(OBU)—As the Ouachita Tigers kick off the 2014 season Sept. 13 in Cliff Harris Stadium, it will mark the culmination of a longtime dream for Tiger football. The new stadium is named in honor of former Ouachita Tiger Cliff Harris, who went on to become Ouachita football’s most successful alumnus to play in the NFL.

“Having my name on the stadium has prompted a lot of reflections for me,” Harris said. “First, I know I am a blessed guy to have many generous friends who have invested in something as important to me as Ouachita. My hope is that having a new stadium for the football team and the school will bring a new energy to Ouachita and needed recognition to the football program.”

‘THV in Your Town’ feature: Pine Bluff

‘THV in Your Town’ feature: Pine Bluff

PINE BLUFF, Ark. (KTHV) - I spent the day visiting Pine Bluff, walking around and going to different visitor centers. Before I visited the area, I posted on Facebook that I was going to Pine Bluff (See original post: http://on.kthv.com/1jbwVrA). Based on some comments left by folks there, I half-expected to find a city in shambles, with decrepit buildings and sporting a mere shadow of a by-gone era. I was pleasantly surprised to find exactly the opposite.

ARKADELPHIA, Ark. (KTHV) – For my second THV 11 in My Town feature, I headed out to Arkadelphia for a day and found quite a few great things to highlight.

ARKADELPHIA ALLIANCE AND DEMOGRAPHICS

First, I stopped by the Arkadelphia Alliance (Arkadelphia Regional Economic Development Alliance and Area Chamber of Commerce if you’re not into that whole brevity thing). There, executive vice president Shelley Loe talked to me about some of the great features in Arkadelphia and what the city had to offer.

If you’re into numbers, the city is home to around 10,714 citizens with 3,736 households as of the 2010 census. (See demographics info: http://on.kthv.com/1hwqnsh) It also offers two accredited 4-year institutions – Henderson State University and Ouachita Baptist University, and the area is home to three school districts—Arkadelphia, Gurdon, and Centerpoint.

According to the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission, Lake Greeson was created when the Narrows Dam was built on the Little Missouri River in 1950. The lake got its name around 1976 from the man who made the dam and lake possible -- Martin White Greeson.

AGFC added the Lake Gresson is prime fishing area for striped bass, black bass, crappie, bream, catfish, white bass and smallmouth bass. It's also well stocked with northern pike and walleye.

This photo of the lake was taken by THViewer Nick Younger, who shared it with our Facebook page on Dec. 31.

Absolutely beautiful!
